Two Beitbridge Border Post officers arrested on corruption charges

A complainant approached the police after R2 000 was demanded from him for a traffic register certificate.

LIMPOPO – Two police officers attached to the Beitbridge Border Post were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Unit on Monday (July 17) and face charges of corruption.

The duo, aged 32 and 47, are said to have demanded R2 000 from the complainant in order to release his traffic register certificate.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the complainant contacted local police alerting them about the bribe and the matter was handed over for further investigation.

“An operation was conducted and the two officers were arrested after receiving trap money that was found in their possession as well as the traffic register certificate,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said the arrest should send a clear message that the South African Police Service in Limpopo do not tolerate any form of criminality, regardless of who the perpetrator is.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said her force have been hard on the ground through Operation KuKula and that those who fall into a trap will ensure that decisive steps are taken.

Ledwaba said the duo will make their first court appearance in the Musina Magistrate’s Court today (July 19).
