Limpopo police hunt suspects who torched trucks on R547

The driver of one of the trucks was instructed to block the road with the vehicle and disembark through the window before it was set alight.

LIMPOPO – The police in Sekhukhune have activated a manhunt for six suspects involved in an armed robbery and torching of three trucks on the R547 Sekhukhune/Lydenburg Road in the early hours of Monday morning (July 10).

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba the six men accosted a Scania truck driver en route to deliver chrome at a local mine.

Two of the suspects, armed with firearms, instructed the driver to block the road with the truck and disembark through the window. The suspects then burnt the truck.

“Two more trucks that were driving behind were also burnt by the suspects who later fled the scene,” Ledwaba’s statement read.

He added that the police and emergency services were summoned to the scene and that the motive of the incident is unknown.

“A case of armed robbery and malicious damage to property has been opened and investigations continue,” he confirmed.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has condemned the incident and called on the community to work with police in ensuring the suspects are apprehended.
