Do your part for Mandela Day and donate blood

The South African National Blood Service have planned a week-long drive to celebrate Mandela Day in the hopes of gaining more donors.

POLOKWANE – International Mandela Day is celebrated by South Africans and the rest of the world as a commemoration of his birth, July 18.

On this day South Africans participate in the Mandela Day Campaign where they use 67 minutes of their day doing various forms of charity work.

The 67 minutes represents the number of years that Nelson Mandela fought for human rights and the ending of apartheid.

This year, 13 years later the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) plans a week-long drive with the hopes to gain more blood donors.

From July 10-23, the SANBS has created a plan as a measure to attract more donors and to get the community involved.

These include live broadcasts with local radio stations at various locations in and out of the city.

Donors will also be able to enjoy a cup of soup and a rusk should they bring a friend along to become a donor.
