Donate study lights for Gr 12s in Seshego

Thandy Sekoaila started the Give-a-Light initiative after seeing learners attend extra lessons offered by graduates in Kgabo Park outside Seshego.

POLOKWANE- The Give-a-Light initiative is requesting the public to assist learners who have to study by candle light, by donating rechargeable LED lights or lanterns.

This initiative is specifically aimed at helping Gr 12 learners study, even during times of load-shedding.

Thandy Sekoaila (35) saw the need to start the initiative after seeing learners attending extra lessons offered by graduates in Kgabo Park outside Seshego.

The intended recipient group are learners in the Capricorn district.

“Seeing their determination to study regardless of load-shedding, by using the flashlights from their cell phones, necessitated the initiative,” said Sekoaila.

Sekoaila is currently busy with a proposal for the Education Department, which suggests these lights should be issued to learners in the same way textbooks are issued.

“This should be a national project, as load-shedding affects all of us. But because we depend on donations, whatever I get I want to start with here at home. Polokwane first, then the whole province, then national,” she said.
