Dam filled with sewage leaves Waterval residents concerned

Despite having reported the issue to the municipality since 2015, a resident claims that no effective action has been taken to resolve the problem.

LIMPOPO – The Waterval community has been grappling with a persistent issue for the past eight years – a dam filled with sewage and debris.

Residents, like Marubini Senoamadi, are concerned about the health risks posed by the situation and believe drastic measures should be taken by the municipality to address it.

Senoamadi expressed his frustration, stating that the sewage attracts flies and mosquitoes, making it unbearable for residents, especially when it rains. The problem becomes worse as passing cars splash sewage water onto children playing outside, forcing them to stay indoors as much as possible.

Despite having reported the issue to the municipality since 2015, Senoamadi claims that no effective action has been taken to resolve the problem. He has reached out to the local councillor for assistance, but so far, no solution has been found. Senoamadi emphasised the urgent need for a resolution.

Another resident, Mable Maluleke, expressed her dissatisfaction with the municipality’s response to the ongoing sewerage problems. “While they occasionally come and repair the issues, the underlying problem remains unsolved.”

Maluleke highlighted the impact on daily life, stating that the persistent smell prevents family members from enjoying their meals, and the constant presence of sewage in the yard makes it difficult to keep doors and windows open for fresh air.

She also mentioned the prevalence of flies, making visitors hesitant to come to their homes due to the fear of disease.

In response to the situation, Matodzi Ralushai, spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, acknowledged the problems and assured that the technical department would address them soon. However, no specific timeline or plan of action was provided.
