Kids Kingdom’s Dorcas is passionate about ECD

Dorcas Musobi believes that education offers endless opportunities to explore and to learn about every child that crosses her path.

POLOKWANE- The children at school know and love her, and having spent six of her eight years in education at Kids Kingdom Preschool, Dorcas Musobi says a career in early childhood education (ECD) is therapeutic for her.

Being a mom to Danny (30), Pabalelo (17) and Mahlogonolo (13), Dorcas’ passion for children started at an early age when she realised she wanted to be a teacher.

“We work with children from all backgrounds and we specialise in supporting children with special learning needs. Every child is unique and will teach you something new about the field. It offers endless opportunities to explore and keep learning,” she said.

She told Review that juggling work and home is easy, as she regards the children at school as her own too.

“What I love about being a mom and a teacher is that I’m able to love, protect and guide others in every way possible. I also enjoy working with my current colleagues in a wonderful school.”

Dorcas advises aspiring teachers to be patient and have a caring heart when working within the educational space. “I’m soft, but I also stick to a routine and school curriculum. That’s very important, so that children learn while having fun at the same time. When one of them does not feel well, I have to be extra cautious around them by making sure I give them that extra bit of care and attention they deserve at that moment, because they tend to be sensitive. If we notice they’re not getting better, we then contact Mom or Dad to pick them up to take them to the doctor.”

In the ECD field, children learn fine motor skills such as writing and drawing, speech and language.

“I love seeing them interact and become part of the lessons. They learn cognitive and intellectual skills such as counting or identifying shapes, and social and emotional skills such as playing with their fellow school mates.”
