Avoid travel fatigue by preparing well before the Easter weekend

As people will be travelling to different destinations over the Easter weekend, fatigue will also be part and parcel of their long trips which could lead to road incidents.

POLOKWANE – Without proper preparation, a road trip can turn into a disaster.

As people will be travelling to different destinations over the Easter weekend, fatigue will also be part and parcel of their long trips, which may lead to road incidents.

However, drivers can avoid travel fatigue only if they prepare thoroughly before the long trip.

According to Dr Seabe Mashabela, the trip does not only start on the day you depart, but many days before that includes lots of preparation to ensure that everything is on point.

He also advised people to check their cars first before they embark on any journey,

“You must make sure that your car is well serviced and it is in good condition because if it is not, it will drain you due to its low performance on the road and that will lead to fatigue. People should wear comfortable clothes when driving, because some clothes, when too warm or too cold, can have a negative impact on your concentration.” he added.

Tips to avoid travel fatigue:

· Sleep for at least eight hours a night before the trip.

· Freshen your mind and body by taking a bath or a shower.

· Carry enough water to avoid dehydration when you drive.

· To avoid a drop in your sugar level, which may lead to fatigue, try to eat sweets or drink juice.

· Avoid eating heavy meals.

· Take breaks along the way.

· Avoid sedative medication that may make you feel sleepy or drained.
