Venda Flea Market provides a boost for local entrepreneurs

The Venda Flea Market is hosted on the first Saturday of every month and gives local artists and entrepreneurs a platform to sell their goods.

LIMPOPO – Customers in Thohoyandou now have the added leisurely activity of being able to shop at the Venda Flea Market, held at the Shoprite parking lot once a month.

Vhembe local’s talent is displayed with unique handmade arts and crafts, jewellery and accessories, cosmetics, crafts, tools, health products, fruit and vegetables, and a range of foods for the whole family.

Flea market organiser, Vhutshilo Netshiongolwe said the idea for the market came about after a series of pop-up markets that were organised locally by government agencies including Seda, in collaboration with the Thulamela Local Municipality.

“Those markets were held on and off, and we picked up from the local traders that they would love to participate in a regular type of market. One of our biggest challenges of business is marketing, and the flea market through social media also gives traders the opportunity to exhibit their goods to a larger audience,” said Netshiongolwe.

He said the market caters to all sectors of business ranging from arts and crafts, fashion, deco, tools, and accessories.

“Anyone who is in business and is keen to be noticed by the public must become a trader at the Flea Market. We opened in February with only four traders and currently we have 13 exhibitors. The market is growing.”

The Venda Flea Market is held every first Saturday of the month.

“For now the stalls are free of charge and it is also free for the public to attend. It is a friendly environment for the entire family. Our traders make good sales too. If you’re just starting up, come and test your product or idea here at our market.

Mulis Deco Designs founder, Margret Mutshinyalo Sumbana said it was an honour to be part of the market and the first time for her as a new entrepreneur.

“It has given me more confidence in myself and my newly established business of selling cushions, pillows, cushion and pillow covers, throws, table runners and upholstery. I gained more business associates to help each other strengthen and grow our business.”

Interested traders who want to become part of the Flea Market must at least have a table, chair, and gazebo.
