The Mapungubwe Arts Festival in Polokwane a raging success

The festival has been hosted on an annual basis from 2002 and continues to celebrate South Africa's diverse cultures and bring people together.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Cricket Club was the place to be on Saturday, during the main event of the Mapungubwe Arts Festival.

Mapungubwe Arts Festival saw thousands of fans from Polokwane and across the province flock to the Polokwane Cricket Club to enjoy performances by their favourite artists and DJs.

The purpose of the festival was to promote the rich and diverse cultural heritage and to deepen social cohesion and national identity.

Beyond this, the festival demonstrates and exposes the artistic skills of local, regional and international musical artists, thereby expanding their market.

This is in line with the vision to ensure that arts and culture contribute to economic growth and the livelihoods of the people of the country and Limpopo in particular.

The Mapungubwe Arts Festival was first hosted in 2002 and was known as the Melting Pot Festival.

The name was changed in 2004.

Mapungubwe Arts Festival kicked off on a high note with the entertainment line-up such as Makhadzi, Dr Colbert Mukwevho, King Monada, Dr Rebecca Malope, Pleasure, Big Zule, Motlanalo, Janisto and CK, Penny Penny, Benny Mayenganyi, Dr Joe Shirimane, Dr Winnie Mashaba, Candy tsa Mandebele and Idols winner Thapelo Mololo, among others.

On the deck, Da Capo, DJ Malwela, King Bash, DJ Complexion and many local DJs to please all fans, the festival aimed to encourage everyone to explore and embrace their culture.

Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Nakedi Sibanda-Kekana thanked the people of Limpopo and all visitors for supporting the Mapungubwe Arts Festival.

She said the province has talent.

“We rely on our legends to continue guiding our young ones both morally, and professionally. The Mapungubwe Music Festival brings our province together, united in its diversity,” said Sibanda-Kekana.
