Mapungubwe Arts Festival kicks off with cultural carnival

The festival will take place over eight days that will end with a musical festival on December 10 at the Polokwane Cricket Club.

POLOKWANE – In celebration of the Mapungubwe Arts Festival which was recently launched in Polokwane, a cultural carnival was conducted to celebrate all the cultures in the province.

On December 2, various cultural groups paraded and performed traditional dances and songs in the streets of the city from SABC Park to the Jack Botes Park.

Assistant director at the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Mabasa Hlangani explained that the carnival parade was the start of celebrating Mapungubwe.

“This event is for the cultural groups from across the province. We wanted the variety of artists to showcase their cultures and show that indeed this province is rich in culture.”

He added that the festival will have a lot of entertainment that will include local artists who will be showcasing their talents.

At Jack Botes, Polokwane Mayor John Mpe said throughout the Mapungubwe Arts Festival the majority of the artists who will perform are local artists.

“We are proud of our people and this event is giving them a chance to showcase their talents after not being able to perform during Covid-19.”

He added that during this festive season Polokwane is the place to be, a place capable of hosting major sporting and cultural events such as Mapungubwe.
