Boyfriend arrested in connection with Limpopo teen’s murder

The 20-year-old man arrived at the police station stating that there was a domestic dispute and asked the police to intervene before he was arrested.

LIMPOPO – Residents of Folovhodwe village in Niani are reeling at the thought that 17-year-old Zwivhuya Miriri apparently died at the hands of her partner.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Lt Col Maphaswa Seabi a man arrived at the police station on November 20 stating that him and his girlfriend had a dispute and that he needed the police to intervene.

“He told the police that he left his girlfriend, who he said was asleep, at his house. When the police arrived at the house, they found the girl’s body in bed, covered with a duvet. She was unresponsive and the police discovered bruises on her body as well as a head wound. Paramedics were summoned and she was certified dead on the scene.”

Pfananani Goma (20), was arrested and charged with murder. He appeared in the Tshilamba Magistrate’s Court on November 21 and the case was postponed to January 16 for bail application.

The chairperson of the Real Men Foundation, Calvin Nenguza, expressed his concern about the rise in cases of domestic violence.

“In love, we are not called to tolerate each other’s abusive behaviour, but to love each other instead. The only way to end domestic violence is to address both genders to bring the spirit of vhuthu back into our communities. Women and child abuse is a serious problem in our communities and everyone must vouch to never become part of the problem, only the solution,” he said.

The police urged community members to consult or engage third parties, such as elders and counsellors, when they find themselves faced with problems, to avoid incidents where violence starts to occur.

Miriri was buried at Folovhodwe on Sunday.
