Boxing tournament in Seshego to fight the scourge of GBV

The tournament will see South African boxers battle for World Boxing Association titles at Ngoako Ramahlodi Sports Complex in Seshego on December 2.

LIMPOPO – Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC Rogers Monama says their newly launched boxing tournament will help them fight the scourge of gender-based violence (GBV) that has engulfed the province.

Monama spoke at the launch of the boxing tournament at an event held at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World on November 11.

The tournament will see South African boxers battle for World Boxing Association titles at Ngoako Ramahlodi Sports Complex in Seshego on December 2.

“This boxing tournament is the first of its kind in Limpopo and aims to create awareness around GBV, which has developed into a virus which continues to devastate our families, societies and sadly, our children,” Monama said.

He added that as the department, they learn of men who abuse their partners, and in some instances, the violence results in a partner’s death.

“As sad as GBV is, it makes me proud to see the organisers of the international boxing tournament, the gambling industry, liquor and entertainment industry such as the one we are in, private sector and local and provincial government getting together to fight the scourge. It is important that as government, we should create an enabling environment which allows creativity and inovation.”

He said the boxing tournament has presented the required creativity as it brought a unique spin to the concept of sports-tourism while at the same time touching on a matter of national importance.

“It is important that we invest in boxing as a province. This sport has in the past proven to attract a lot of attention and it is highly beneficial for the tourism sector,” Monama said.

The first bout of the evening will see Jeff Magagane tacking on Zolisa Batyi for the South African title, Sifiso Hlungwane and Khanyiseni Mobakazi will battle for the junior lightweight title while Tshifhiwa Munyai will fight Crispin Moliati for the junior welterweight international title which will be the last fight of the evening.
