Man arrested for the rape of three women in Vaalwater

The 59-year-old man was arrested immediately after he appeared in court on charges of rape in the North West.

LIMPOPO – The detectives from Modimolle Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit arrested a 59-year-old man suspected of multiple incidents of rape.

The FCS unit’s meticulous investigation led them to believe that the man in custody can be linked to three rape cases that took place between 2013 – 2017 in Vaalwater outside Modimolle.

The rape victims were aged between 17 – 43 at the time.

“It is alleged that the man would hide in the bushes close to shopping centres and corner unsuspecting women as they pass by. He would then threaten them with a knife or strangle them,” Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed in a statement.

Forensic evidence positively linked the man to the active cases and he was arrested yesterday (November 8) at the Fochville Magistrate’s Court in North West, where he also appeared on a charge of rape.

“We thank the outstanding investigation conducted by this investigation team and we will continue to prioritise gender-based violence cases,” provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said while he congratulated the FCS for their hard work.

The accused is expected to appear before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court today (November 9) facing charges of rape.
