Local athletes are invited to train, race at the next qualifiers

Pietersburg Road Runners chairperson Colinda Potgieter says everyone is welcome to join the club and prepare for the upcoming marathons.

POLOKWANE – Pietersburg Road Runners aims to attract more athletes to their club following the decline in numbers over the years.

The club currently has 60 athletes which is a huge decrease from the 90 they had in the past.

The chairperson of the club, Colinda Potgieter said the decline resulted from Covid-19 where former members did not return to the club.

“New members are welcome. We want to double the figure and also have more walkers at the club. We train in groups, 15km to 32km on Saturdays and follow a strict training programme. We do long distance running, time tests and shorter distances and everyone is welcome.”

She added that they will stage a 42km marathon on November 19 which will see athletes running from Haenertsburg to Tzaneen to qualify for next year’s Two Oceans and Comrades marathons.

“The Two Oceans will be held in April while the Comrades Marathon will be in June next year, so it is important to prepare now. We want our athletes to show commitment and pitch up at those events.”
