MEC hands over storm flags in honour of fallen traffic officials

Families of the fallen traffic officials who passed away during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic were bestowed with storm flags as a tribute to their duty.

POLOKWANE – At the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, many restrictions were enforced to keep South African citizens safe.

Among those restrictions was the ruling that no more than 50 people could attend a public event.

The regulations made funerals difficult, and as a result, semi-military ceremonies in honour of the fallen heroes within Limpopo could not be afforded to officials who lost their lives during this time.

To rectify this and to give the loved ones of 24 provincial traffic law enforcement officers closure, Transport and Community Safety MEC Florence Radzilani handed over storm flags to the families of the fallen heroes in recognition of the passed officials’ service to the province.

It is custom to hand over storm flags as part of a semi-military ceremony to the families of deceased officials, who arrived at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex today (October 27) to honour their good work.

“On behalf of the people form Limpopo, the provincial government and other parts of the society, we want to send our heartfelt condolences to the families of these fallen heroes,” Radzilani said at the ceremony, and explained that they hosted the occasion to recognise the guidance the province lost.

“We appreciate the invaluable contribution they made to the community. There is nothing as devastating as the death of a loved one, but what is more painful, is the pain of facing this devastation alone, without your closest family members, friends and relatives. This is our attempt to sooth your pain,” she added.

Radzilani asked everyone in attendance to stand, as a sign of respect, as she read out the names of the 24 deceased officials.

The fallen heroes who were honoured at this event are:

The names of the traffic law enforcers who passed away during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“I stand before all of you, on behalf of our Government, the traffic fraternity in the province as MEC for Transport and Community Safety in Limpopo and a grateful nation, to ask the families to please accept these flags as a token of our appreciation, for your loved one’s contribution, to society,” Radzilani concluded.
