POLOKWANE – Limpopo was well represented during the 22nd National Teachers Awards ceremony hosted at the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria on October 20.
The Limpopo Department of Education congratulated its teachers, who scooped up seven awards of excellence received in various categories.
“We are delighted by the number of awards received by our teachers as it shows that we are leading in most of the categories and this will also encourage up and coming teachers as well learners taught by them,” said spokesperson Mike Maringa.
The annual awards event was hosted by the department of basic education to recognise and celebrate the country’s outstanding educators who remain committed to their roles in moulding the citizens of the future.
This year’s edition of the prizes has been connected to other teacher award programmes around the world, including the African Union Teacher Prize, the Commonwealth Education Awards and the Global Teacher Prize.
Among the award winners in the Capricorn district, Kgaugelo Mohlala from Kgwadu Primary School received first position in mathematics (GET), while Boduma Primary School’s Sophia Chepape scooped excellence in Gr R teaching. Martha Bopape from Mahlasedi Special School won excellence in special school needs teaching and Irene Modiba from St Brendan’s Catholic Secondary School won second place in excellence in secondary school leadership.
Mopani district was represented by Alfred Mokgalaka from De Toit Secondary who won the best teacher award and from Technical High School Tom Naude, Antoinette Jordaan, who went home with an excellence award in Mathematics (FET).
Mpho Digashu from Leseding High School in the Waterberg District received third place for excellence in secondary teaching.
Teachers were nominated in various categories from the diverse nature of schools across the country and awarded in honour of their excellence from foundation phase teaching to secondary school teaching as well as lifetime achievement awards.
First position winners went home with a tablet and laptop fully loaded with data for 12 months, R10 000 cash for the school, training courses, a Fundza Lushaka bursary to a learner and a computer lab for the school.
