Anti-drug fun walk to curb substance abuse in Westenburg

A document shared by Adcow states there was an increase in substance abuse and purchase in Westenburg, which prompted the awareness campaign.

POLOKWANE – The Anti-drug Coalition of Westenburg (Adcow) took a walk through the streets to the Westenburg Police Station recently to create awareness about substance abuse.

The non-profit organisation as led by South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Limpopo started the walk at Westenburg’s recreational park and handed out informative pamphlets to residents.

The reads explored responsible alcohol consumption, advising that people should have no more than one alcoholic drink per hour.

The 2021/22 statistics collected by Sanca showed that an average of 6 902 people of different races and ages are prone to substance abuse in the Capricorn district.

A document shared by Adcow states that the coalition was established after realising that there was an increase in users and clients coming from Westenburg when compared to other areas.

The chairperson, Dinah Claasen, is pleased that the Community Policing Forum will increase the reach to those who need rehabilitation.

“We are there to help them,” she states.

The initiative was well supported by other community organisations such as the Westenburg V-Dub Crew whose vehicles were used during the event at no cost.

Claasen says they hope to further grow their organisation by forming relationships with local government to implement their ideas which need funding and other forms of support.

She said everyone in the community should be part of some initiative that helps in reducing the demand and harm caused by drugs.
