Nurse uses years of experience to help with family planning

Motlago Maseko said she saw the need to provide reproductive health service in the community and to protect residents, especially the youth, against 'bogus' doctors.

POLOKWANE – Resident Motlago Maseko decided to start her own business years ago to better the lives of many local families.

After she served in government as a professional nurse for 27 years, Maseko decided to open her own practice called First Stop Women’s Clinic in June 2017.

The practice opened its doors at the Tropicana building in Ladanna and they specialise in family planning, termination of pregnancy, pregnancy testing, sonars, cervical screening (pap smears), medical screening (OHS), rapid blood sugar testing, blood pressure testing, HIV testing and sexual transmitted infection screening and treatment.

The 52-year-old business woman and nurse worked in Jane Furse Memorial Hospital for 10 years, after which she moved on to Rethabile Health Centre in Polokwane where she served for 17 years before she resigned in 2017.

She said from a young age she always wanted to help those who could not help themselves and her 27 years as a nurse was bliss.

“The victory of saving a life is priceless. I had my clinic for five years now and it is one of my greatest achievements, given that I had a vision of what I wanted and it was eventually realised. It is my dream to own a practice where I can help young people and families regarding family planning,” Maseko explained.

She said she saw the need to provide reproductive health service in the community and to protect residents, especially the youth, against ‘bogus’ doctors.

“Fraudulent doctors sell medication to vulnerable children and families, who sometimes never even receive the products. I hope the government is trying to eradicate bogus doctors by all means, as they are killing our children. When a young girl experiences problems and ends up at the wrong doctor, her condition can worsen, causing her not to bear a child in the future, or she might even die. If they were directed to the correct professionals, we can help save current and future lives. Here at the First Stop women’s Clinic, I make sure to see the patient for myself, screen them and then take action accordingly,” she said.

Maseko told BONUS she believes if government can train more nurses and be more vigilant in regards to fake clinics, they will no longer experience so many deaths.

When asked what her secret to success is, she said hard work, effective time management and proper client care will make you go places.

“To manage my own family life and run a business is not easy, but I make sure that I do what makes me happy. My main objective is to provide a professional service with qualified teams and proper supervision. I guarantee outstanding customer satisfaction at all times,” she said and advised women to stand up for themselves and take charge of their lives.
