Golden Games promotes a healthy lifestyle among the elderly

Older persons from five districts of the province competed in the hopes of being selected for the Limpopo team for the national Golden Games in Cape Town later this month.

LIMPOPO- The Former Social Development MEC Dr Dickson Masemola encouraged older persons in the province to actively participate in the Golden Games and various sporting codes to promote a healthy lifestyle.

He said older persons who will be selected to represent Limpopo during the national Golden Games will travel to Cape Town from October 24-28.

Masemola was joined by the chairperson of the Older Persons Forum in Limpopo, Dr Solomon Nchabeleng, Thulamela Mayor Sarah Rammbuda and councillors when he officially opened the active ageing programme of the provincial Golden Games which was held at Malamulele Stadium, October 4.

It was the first provincial games held since 2019 due to the outbreak of Covid-19 and older persons from five districts of the province competed in the hopes of being selected for the Limpopo team.

Some of the activities for the Golden Games include soccer, athletics, duck walk, dress up, brisk walk, jukskei, ring the stick and passing the ball.

One of the aims of the Golden Games is to create a healthy lifestyle for older persons as part of the active ageing programme aimed at the health, well-being and dignity of older persons.

Nchabeleng said the games are not only about winning medals but also to make older persons live a healthy life at their retirement time.

“There is no better clinic or doctor for older persons than to actively participate in the Golden Games as we understand that our number one killer of old persons worldwide is stress.

“We encourage our older persons to actively participate in exercising themselves for a healthy lifestyle,” said Nchabeleng.

According to him, they appealed to the Office of the Premier to develop the Older Persons Forum desks so that they can discuss the matters affecting older people under one roof.
