Backup your home and business with this solution to load-shedding

Stephen Nekhumbe says it is without a doubt needed to have some sort of backup electricity source in one's home and business.

POLOKWANE -Now more than ever, residents consider the use of backup electricity options for their homes and businesses in the event of load-shedding, power cuts, or unexpected power outages.

With the use of backup power sources like solar panels and battery storage people can ensure they have electricity in their homes even when load-shedding occurs.

Stephen Nekhumbe gives specialised industry-related and accredited training at Capricorn Tvet College and gave the Polokwane Review his input on how inverter batteries and solar panels can be an affordable solution during load-shedding hours.

“Solar panels are not only environmentally friendly, but they also save money in the long term compared to prepaid electricity.”

With the consistent issues experienced as a cause of unforeseen power outrages, or even extended load-shedding stages, Nekhumbe says it is without a doubt needed to have some sort of backup electricity source in one’s home and business.

In order to become more self-sufficient or grid independent, Nekumbe explains how the installation of solar panels will keep the lights on, the kettle boiling and the machines working during load-shedding.

When utilising solar energy, the solar panels absorb direct UV rays.

You can store the energy by using batteries or you can use it to power a business or house during the day and the energy in the batteries can be used during the night or early morning hours.

There will also be energy stored in the batteries for later use, so you don’t feel helpless in times of power outages.

Nekhumbe added that although the panels may not power the whole house, they work best as a backup solution in those hours of load-shedding and have a longer lifespan once installed.
“The solar panels generate enough power for household appliances such as lights, kettles and fans,” he adds.
