Local karatekas bring medals home from national competition

Kimura Shukokai Karate's karatekas did their sensei and city proud when they showed their national competitors what the are made of.

POLOKWANE – A team from local Kimura Shukokai Karate brought back an armful of trophies and medals after successfully participating in the national KSI Tournament that was recently hosted at Wits University in Gauteng.

James Marais won one silver and two gold medals, Harry Marais won one bronze and two gold medals, while Duan le Roux brought one gold and one bronze medal home.

Vanessa Cronjé added two silver medals to her collection and Saricia Cronjé proudly accepted her silver medal.

Georgia Funnell won one silver and one bronze medal and although Don and Stefan Ancic came fourth in their divisions, they had a tough round and presented the club well.

Babsie Roos, the club’s senior ladies champion won gold in the Ladies Open Kata division and silver in the Kumite division.

According to sensei Marcia van Niekerk, it was a strong and well-organised championship and that it was amazing to have participants and team leaders from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Natal joining.

“In the Unison Team event boys and girls competing against each other, my club won the gold and silver medals beating black belt teams and I am really proud of all my students, it was hard work and training we put in but pulled it off,” Van Niekerk said.
