Westenburg residents benefit from borehole system

The newly installed borehole water system has not only benefited residents in their daily lives but has been beneficial for the community garden.

POLOKWANE – Residents in Westenburg are benefiting greatly from a new borehole water system installed for them by Beverages South Africa and water treatment enterprise, Kusini.

Situated on empty ground along Grand Canyon Street, clean water is drawn from the ground and transported for up to a kilometer long, where residents can access clean, running and drinkable water.

The water system used to draw clean water from the ground in Westenburg.

The system alleviates the burden of steep water shortages in Polokwane, including Westenburg.

Beverages South Africa’s public relations officer David Nhlapo said the system was installed at no cost. “We see it as a corporate social investment into the community,” he told the Polokwane Observer.

Resident Rebecca Sekokotla said the system has benefited the community garden.

Products harvested from the garden are either donated to impoverished homes or sold to local households who can afford to buy.

“At times, we even sell to the schools here and use the profit to grow our lovely garden,” she added.

Rebecca Sekokotla said the produce from the community garden is sold to schools in the area and the profit is fed back into the garden.

Sekokotla said this courteous act should be exemplary to the local municipality, suggesting that the Polokwane Municipality collaborates with other stakeholders to provide water for residents.
