Ext 133 residents fear empty shacks are becoming hideouts for criminals

Police are in the process of identifying a man who raped and killed a 12-year-old girl who attended school in Alf Makaleng Primary in Zone 5 on September 22.

POLOKWANE – Some residents of Ext 133 near Zone 8 in Seshego are threatening to demolish shacks they say are not occupied on a regular basis.

This comes after an incident in which a 12-year-old girl who attended school in Alf Makaleng Primary at Zone 5, was raped and killed by an unidentified man after school on September 22.

Residents now fear that empty shacks are becoming a hideout for criminals to thrive even though the crime itself happened in a bushy area between Ext 133 and Zone 5.

Ward 13 councillor, Mafiwa Leballo told BONUS that officials from the Polokwane Municipality put pressure on those who had not built anything on their stands to at least build shacks as they would not construct RDP houses without proof that someone wants to live there.

He said this is the reason why some ended up erecting shacks instead of building, although they may not physically always reside there.

Municipal spokesperson, Thipa Selala says the issue of unoccupied shacks came as a surprise as they had taken residents from Freedom Park to occupy the new area.

“If there are such shacks, we will have to liaise with the ward councillor and the committee to look into re-allocating the sites to those who need them,” he adds.

Leballo says the community is frustrated by the way in which the area is unsafe for women and children to live in.

In the meantime, Seshego police communication officer, Sgt Alli Maluleke confirmed that the perpetrator was found and given to the mob.

He was subsequently beaten and set alight. Investigations to identify him are still underway.
