Roadworks on Nelson Mandela Drive extended to end of September

The extension of roadworks on Nelson Mandela Drive is due to the non-availability and delays in the delivery of construction material.

POLOKWANE – Frustrated motorists and other road users will have to wait until the end of the month for the completion of roadworks on Nelson Mandela Drive.

Leeto la Polokwane’s assistant manager for public transport regulations and compliance Rebotile Malakalaka said the temporary road closure, which was earmarked to be completed by August 31, is now expected to be completed by the end of September.

“This extension is as a result of non-availability and delays in the delivery of construction material,” she said.

Roadworks have been underway since July in order for compaction adjacent to the brigde structure as well as tying the road levels in with the bridge.

Malakalaka said one lane in each direction will be temporarily closed for 250m approaching the Sand River Bridge between Zebediela and Vermikuliet Streets along Nelson Mandela Drive.

“Traffic will be accommodated in remaining lanes in each direction and traffic will be diverted to the upgraded lanes once reconstruction is complete while reconstruction continues on the remaining lane. Upon completion, all lanes will be opened for traffic,” she said.
