UPDATE: Death toll in N1 bypass collision rises to 10

10 passengers from an SUV, including three children and seven adults, died following a head-on collision with a truck on the N1 bypass on Tuesday.

POLOKWANE – The death toll in the N1 bypass head-on collision on Tuesday morning (September 6) has risen to 10.

The spokesperson of the Department of Transport and Community Safety Tidimalo Chuene said the death toll rose after an injured person admitted to hospital died.

“Seven adults and three children, all from the SUV, bring the total fatalities to 10,” she said.

Chuene added that the truck driver sustained serious injuries and is still in hospital.

Fatigue is suspected as the possible cause of the collision

A source on the scene told the Polokwane Review that the SUV had been travelling from Gauteng to Venda at the time of the collision.

Chuene added that information regarding whether overloading of the vehicle formed part of the investigation into the collision was not yet available.
