UPDATE: Nine confirmed dead in N1 bypass head-on collision

Fatigue has been cited as the possible cause for a head-on collision on the N1 bypass this morning that killed nine people.

The death toll in the N1 bypass head-on collision on Tuesday morning (September 6) has risen to 10.

The Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene has confirmed that nine people were killed in a head-on collision on the N1 bypass this morning.
“Four male and five female passengers from the SUV were killed bringing the total number of fatalities to nine,” she said.
The road is still closed for recovery.

POLOKWANE – Two children are among seven people killed in a head-on collision on the N1 bypass near Mall of the North this morning (September 6).
According to the Department of Transport and Community Safety spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene, an SUV lost control and collided head-on with a truck.

“The road has to be temporarily closed for law enforcement officers and emergency services to attend to the scene. Two people who sustained injuries have been transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention,” she said.
Chuene said fatigue is suspected as the possible cause of the collision.
Transport MEC Polly Boshielo urged motorists to obey the rules of the road at all times in order for them to arrive alive at their respective destinations.
