Grobersdal assault suspect to secure new legal representative

Corrie Pretorius (50) is accused of assaulting, swearing and pointing a firearm at a 16-year-old boy at a food outlet at the Groblersdal Game Shopping Centre, allegedly over the use of a salt shaker.

LIMPOPO – Corrie Pretorius (50) will remain in custody until his next appearance in the Groblersdal Magistrates Court in order for him to secure a new legal representative.

Pretorius briefly appeared in court today (September 6) on charges of assualt with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and pointing of a firearm.

He was filmed pointing a firearm at a 16-year-old boy at a food outlet in the Grobersdal Game Shopping Centre on June 15, allegedly over the use of a salt shaker, and was arrested on June 16.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said the complainant and his cousin were at the outlet when the victim asked to use the same seasoning as Pretorius.

“The accused allegedly became furious and started assaulting the boy by pushing him out of the store. He continued assaulting the boy while pointing him with a firearm and left the complainant lying on the ground,” she said.

Malabi-Dzhangi said the complainant was later taken to the Groblersdal Hospital where he received medical attention and was later discharged.

The video caused public outcry over Pretorius’ use of violence towards the minor.

Malabi Dzhangi said the state opposed Pretorius’ bail, stating that his release would not only endanger his life but will disrupt public order.

During his last appearance, Pretorius’ wife opened a case of intimidation in court after the community threatened their family.

“The accused also submitted an affidavit that he had been assaulted in custody and that his life is in danger in the correctional service facility,” Malabi Dzhangi said at the time.
