Malawian man killed in house robbery in Polokwane

Sheik Omar Mkwamda, who served in the town mosque, was shot dead in the house he resided in on the corner of Jorrisen and Dorp Street.

POLOKWANE – A foreign national muezzin was killed in the early hours of this morning (August 30).

According to a trusted source within the community, Sheik Omar Mkwamda was shot dead in the house he resided in on the corner of Jorrisen and Dorp Street.

An unknown number of suspects are said to have entered the house in an apparent house robbery which led to his death.

Mkwamda is known as the town mosque’s muezzin and was responsible for proclaiming the call to daily prayer.

He played an important role in ensuring an accurate prayer schedule for the Muslim community.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that a shooting did take place. “No arrests have been made as yet and investigations continue,” he said.
