‘Put up a wall to prevent further drownings’ – Grandfather pleas

POLOKWANE – The grandfather of one of the three children who lost their lives in the Seshego Dam recently appealed to the Department of Water to barricade the dam to prevent any further tragedies.

The police’s search and rescue unit spent the first and second week of August trying to retrieve the bodies of Kotsema Ramaru (9), Mashilo Kubu (12) and their friend who remains unidentified, who drowned after their make-shift boat capsized.

At the time, they were attempting to cross the dam on a polystyrene board.

“If the dam is important to the community, the department must erect a wall to protect our children from the water,” said Lucas Kubu, grandfather to Mashilo.

The children were buried on August 20 at their respective homes, with Mashilo having been laid to rest at Ga-Monyebodi in Bochum.

The local police cautioned parents and guardians to be aware of their children’s whereabouts at all times.

“Parents and guardians are once more cautioned to ensure that their children do not engage in swimming activities unsupervised and must be wary of this dam as several drowning incidents were reported in the area in the past,” Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said.

Community leader Vincent Kunutu thanked those who supported the families for their efforts.

“As Seshego Community Against Crime And Gangsterism we would like to thank everyone who supported the families during their difficult times. We want to encourage parents to know where their children are at all times.” Spokesperson of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Sputnik Ratau had not provided comment at the time of going to print.
