POLOKWANE – A breakthrough has been made in the murder case of Lindie Oberholzer.

A 18-year-old boy, who was arrested after a foiled house robbery yesterday (August 23), has been charged with her murder.

Sources close to the investigation told Review the teen confessed to her murder.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo in a statement confirmed the boy was positively linked, but did not comment on whether a confession was made. “The boy was arrested for the house robbery in Welgelegen where he gained access to the house through an open door. He accosted the 54-year-old home owner and reportedly hit the victim with a flower pot,” Mojapelo explained.

He added that the teen stole two laptops, a cellphone, tablet and books before he fled the scene.

“The home owner sought help from his neighbours and the police were notified. Detectives, with assistance of Urban Africa Security and Mighty TRS, arrested him shortly after and the stolen goods were recovered,” Mojapelo said.

The boy was then linked to Oberholzer‘s murder.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe hailed the police and security officials for apprehending the teen. “As we continue to fight against serious and violent crimes, this collaboration and swift arrest will send a clear message to other criminals that the police are determined to bring all perpetrators to book,” she added.

Mojapelo said their ongoing investigations will determine if the teen can be linked to other cases. “He will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (August 25) to face charges of murder and house robbery,” he concluded.
