Funda leaders inspire reading in children

A Funda leader is a foot soldier who brings stories and books to children in their corner of the country.

POLOKWANE – Literature lovers all around South Africa are urged to become literacy activists with the Nal’ibali Funda leader initiative.

These heroes take on many forms and sizes, such as teachers, parents, librarians and all book-loving volunteers ready to help.

Although anybody can be a Funda leader, it is recommended that one possesses a specific set of qualities. The perfect Funda leader cares and has respect for children, wants to help children learn through fun and relaxed interactions with stories, and they are eager to share their storytelling and reading knowledge with others.

Nal’ibali provincial co-ordinator Reggy Letsoalo explained they offer free online training courses that cover topics such as how to tell and read stories out loud to children, and how to plan, start and run a reading club.

“All that’s required is for you to sign up and you will be automatically connected to the Nal’ibali network. This allows Nal’ibali to follow your journey and offer training and support in your literacy activities. The work will also be featured on the website and we encourage our leaders to share experiences on social media and to stay in direct contact with Nal’ibali,” he said. Nal’ibali interacts with Funda leaders around the country to collaborate, share ideas, join bigger events and to grow the network of literacy activists. From time to time, Nal’ibali has exclusive offers and competitions for active Funda leaders.

“The most active Funda leaders from across the country are invited for a celebratory event once a year.

“Through these events, you can benefit from resources like new books, promotional materials, gift vouchers and visits by well-known authors,” he added.
