Various Polokwane roads closed due to blockade by taxi drivers

Members of three taxi associations have blocked a number of streets, due to 'their demands not being met'.

POLOKWANE – Motorists are advised to avoid a number of roads in the city, as they have been blockaded by taxis.

Drivers from the Seshego-Polokwane Taxi Association (SPTA) have blocked various streets in the Polokwane CBD. These streets include Market, Church, Jorissen, Grobler and Thabo Mbeki streets.

Traffic is congested in various areas.

SPTA spokesperson Ally Harmer confirmed to Review that their members and members of the Flora Park and Westenburg taxi associations have blocked these streets because they were ‘surprised’ that the Leeto la Polokwane bus service resumed today (August 19).

“We woke up to the news that the bus service will continue today, but we were told it will be suspended until next week Tuesday when we are set to meet with the Polokwane Municipality. The municipality’s officials told us at our meeting on Monday that they will meet with ‘upper structures’ and the consult with us again.”

Harmer explained they felt ‘undermined’ because, according to him, they have not received any feedback in regards to the municipality’s discussion with the ‘upper structures’.

“If we reach an agreement, then the bus service wil run smoothly again,” he said and added that commuters who make use of taxis do not have to fret. “Our associations are working together to assist our commuters and our operations are running smoothly.”

Review contacted Leeto la Polokwane spokesperson Rebotile Malakalaka and David Ramakgwakgwa, the acting director of roads and transportation services for Leeto la Polokwane. They could not immediately be reached for comment.
