Roadworks: Traffic officials relieve congestion during peak hours

Commuters who travel on the D19 Matlala road, and R567 Nelson Mandela Drive at peak times, are comforted by the sterling work done by traffic officials.

POLOKWANE – Congestion was a reality the last few weeks due to roadworks that are underway on the respective regional and district roads. Most commuters travelling on these routes daily are accustomed to the heavy traffic on the two roads, especially in the mornings and late afternoons, however, the road construction had made it even worse.

The Department of Transport has since intervened, saying it took note of the heavy traffic flow.

Departmental spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said traffic officers are doing point duty every weekday in the mornings on D19 Matlala road to help ease congestion.

In the meantime, Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL) says a part of this infrastructure project involves the rehabilitation of a portion of Road D19 from the intersection with Road D544 in Polokwane, which ends at Kalkspruit.

The project is set to end on November 10.

RAL communication manager, Luyanda Sithole says the usual overflow of traffic on the two roads is caused by illegal entries onto the road at villages such as Chebeng.

“In addition, buses do not have drop-off points and when they stop to drop off commuters, they tend to cause traffic for other motorists behind them,” Sithole said.
