Residents buckle up for a worthy cause
It was time for the annual Round Table Cannonball Run Africa and drivers and co-drivers participated in a variety of activities in parts of Limpopo and the City of Stars.
POLOKWANE – The event is hosted every year in an effort to raise money and a total of 30 impressive cars were parked at The Ranch Resort on Monday while the drivers and co-drivers attended the gala dinner and prize-giving ceremony inside. The majority of cars were not your everyday-car you see on the road frequently and boasted brands such as Lamborghini, Porsche and Aston Martin.
Some participants arrived with their flashy BMWs, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rovers to join in on the fun. The more ordinary models were also part of the group. According to Cannonball Run African media liaison officer Ross Crichton, the event was founded in 2003.
“It is a cryptic clue photo rally with sporting events such as track experiences, gymkhana’s, high speed challenges and out-of-car activities, not forgetting general participation, mayhem and fun.”
He emphasised the event is not all about flashy and expensive cars, nor is it about speed. “We abide by the law and some activities even force drivers to stay below the speed limit. We also have our own “traffic officials”, called chips. They fine drivers during the event for any reason possible, which is how we raise money. Besides this fun-filled event, our main fundraiser is the gala dinner and auction,” Crichton said.
All the money goes to the QuadPara Association of South Africa (Qasa), which is considered as the leading agency representing persons with spinal cord injury and physical disability in South Africa. Qasa is a non-profit organisation for quadriplegics and paraplegics that strives to develop products, programmes and services in order to develop capacity among its members and to offer opportunities for societal integration.
Crichton thanked their sponsors, especially their main sponsor, Data Sciences Corporation, for the successful event.
