[WATCH] Baboon spotted on roof of house in Bendor Drive

Residents are advised to not approach the animal if spotted and that doors and windows must be kept closed where the animal is frequently seen.

POLOKWANE – A baboon has been spotted roaming the Bendor area.

The primate was spotted on the roof of Julia Jansen’s house on Bendor Drive at around 09:20 this morning.

Jansen, who provided footage of the baboon to Review, said she heard a loud noise on the roof, but thought it was a cable from their Wi-Fi antenna.

“Our dogs were barking and when we checked the CCTV footage, we saw the animal,” she said.

On Tuesday (August 9), a message was sent to a local neighbourhood group warning that the animal had been spotted in a local estate in Bendor.

The Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (Ledet) spokesperson Zaid Kalla said nothing has been reported to the department.

“No team has been dispatched to the area and no complaints have been received from the neighbourhood,” he said.

A baboon was last spotted in the Sterpark and Bendor areas in January and Kalla at the time, cautioned the public against approaching the baboon.

He warned that baboons can be dangerous when cornered and advised parents to ensure that young children and toddlers are in the care of their mothers and/or nannies at all times.

“Doors and windows must be kept closed where the animal is frequently seen,” he had said.

This is not the first time a wild animal has been spotted in the city. In 2014 a leopard was spotted at the Coca-Cola Fortune manufacturing plant in Marmer Street, Magna Via.
