Experts explain the importance of breastmilk

In light of World Breastfeeding Week (August 1-7), Review spoke to dietician Anke van Waveren and general practitioner Dr Mabowa Makhomisane.

POLOKWANE – Local dietician Anke van Waveren says breastmilk is the ideal food for your infant.

“Breastmilk is safe, clean and contains antibodies that help protect against common childhood illnesses such as leukaemia and infant death syndrome. Breastmilk provides all the energy and nutrients that the infant needs for the first months of life,” she explains.

According to her, breastmilk is one of the most effective ways to ensure your child’s health and survival. “However, nearly two out of three infants are not breastfed for the recommended six months,” she adds.

Van Waveren says there are benefits for mom and baby when it comes to breastmilk. She explains breastmilk provides antibodies that protect your child against infections, is easier to digest than formula milk, helps to develop a fully-functional immune system and lowers the risk of infant death syndrome.

Van Waveren says moms lose the weight they gained during pregnancy, easier when they breastfeed.

She provides advice to moms who experience breastfeeding-related challenges such latching, mastitis, bleeding nipples, breastmilk pumping and storage difficulties. “Seek professional help to help you enjoy the bonding time with your child.”

General practitioner Dr Mabowa Makhomisane agrees with Van Waveren. “Breastmilk is highly recommended as it provides better natural nutrients as compared to formula.”

He highlights that breastmilk strengthens your child’s immune system.
