The homeless and Limpopo Mall help each other out

Centre manager Carien de Beer told Polokwane Observer to make the day manageable, they ensured that all the big garbage bins stationed outside and around the mall were thoroughly cleaned out so that no one ‘cheats’ the whole purpose of the day.

POLOKWANE – Limpopo Mall, in collaboration with Pick ‘n Pay, decided to treat homeless residents with a warm meal as a build-up to Mandela Day last Wednesday.

There was, however, a catch. In order to get a cup of warm soup and a bun, each person had to clean up the area around the mall and bring one or two bags full of refuse as proof.

Carien de Beer (centre manager) hands out soup and buns to a homeless individual.

To assist with the refuse bags, Polokwane Municipal Waste Management donated 60 packs to the mall for the people to use.

Elias Ramogoebo (Polokwane Municipality management), Frans Moloto (Limpopo Mall maintenance), Petrus Modiba (Limpopo Mall handyman), Rachel Manamela (Pick n’ Pay staff), Carien de Beer (centre manager), Elias Setati (Department of Health Capricorn District assistant director in communications), Samuel Makweya (head of security) and Elizabeth Mokoele (receptionist) are ready to serve the homeless.

“The day was indeed a success and we would love to host more of these events so that we can help and reach out to more homeless individuals,” she said.

South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, as well as Health and Social Development joined in on the initiative and made sure that all homeless individuals are assisted in terms of hunger, health and hygiene.

“We realised some people want help, but don’t know where to go. This is why we asked more organisations to join us to make every homeless person’s live better. Charity starts at home,” Carien concluded.
