Entrepreneur says having a solid strategy in place is key for a successful business.

ABSA has embarked on a campaign to support and empower SMEs across South Africa.

We sat with Top Style School Wear to get a better understanding of their business.

  • When did you start your business?

I started my business in 2008

  • What led you to pursue entrepreneurship?

I’ve always been business minded and when I moved to South Africa from Somalia my intention was to start my own business. I started by selling clothes and then school uniforms.

  • What are the challenges you experience when you were starting your business and how did you overcome them?

Money is always the problem when starting a business but if you’re determined and resourceful you can overcome any challenge.

  • What impact did the Covid-19 pandemic have on your business?

My business was badly affected like most businesses who were not selling essential products, but I remained strong and positive. Even now things are slow, but I have to keep pushing

  • Your business is one of the businesses that are part of the ABSA SME programme, what does this mean to you and how do such initiatives from corporates like ABSA help SMEs?

I want my business to grow so I’m very happy to be part of this ABSA programme.

  • What is your advice for SMEs?

They need to raise money first and have a solid strategy in place because if you don’t plan properly, you will fail all the time in business.
