Flora Park’s Nyeleti Phakula balances leadership and schoolwork

Flora Park's head girl Nyeleti Phakula (17) shares how time management and prioritising schoolwork help her excel as a leader and student.

POLOKWANE – “My school work always takes priority.”

These are the words of Nyeleti Angel Phakula (17), the head girl at Flora Park Comprehensive High School, who believes that academic excellence remains the cornerstone of her leadership journey.

She acknowledges that the role of head girl comes with significant responsibility, but she has found a way to manage it all through effective time management and by prioritising.

“There’s a lot of responsibility that comes with being a head girl, and I work hard to keep up with my school work. I’m able to do so through prioritising school work and managing my time effectively. I make time for my meetings and create enough time to study.”

In her role, Nyeleti serves as the voice of the learners, ensuring their concerns are communicated to the school leadership.

She views being a role model as very important and to represent her school with dignity and inspiring fellow learners to aim high.

“I have the responsibility to represent my school in a dignified manner and serve as a role model to all learners at our school. I want to encourage them to reach higher levels,” she said.

Despite the expectations placed on her, Nyeleti remains grounded in her quest to balance her list of priorities.

“Setting realistic goals helps me manage pressure. My study timetable allows me to allocate specific times for studying and stick to them. I quiz myself and use past question papers to familiarise myself with exam formats and question types,” she said.
