LIMPOPO – The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Polly Boshielo has urged motorists to obey the rules of the road following two sepearate incidents that claimed the lives of 11 people this weekend.
Eight people were confirmed dead, while others were seriously injured in a collision on the D3260 road towards Seloane in Phalaborwa Municipality on Friday night (July 15).
A bakkie, carrying 13 people was hit by a heavy motor vehicle and a minibus travelling in the opposite direction. Seven people were killed on impact and one died while being transported to the hospital.
Departmental spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said the injured people were taken to Maphutha Malatji hospital in Namakgale.
“Speeding and reckless driving are cited as possible causes for the incident,” Chuene said.
Meanwhile, two teenage boys and a girl were confirmed dead on Saturday (July 16) after the bakkie they were traveling in lost control due to suspected reckless driving on the R81 road near Xikukwani village.
The only survivor was transported to Nkhensani Hospital for medical attention.
Boshielo said the incidents, which happened a day apart, is a cause for concern and that motorists should not become impatient to the point where lives are lost in this manner.
“We have to, at all times obey and follow rules to the latter. It’s the only way to arrive alive and save lives” said MEC Boshielo.
