Young boys riding bikes discover abandoned baby in bushes

After having survived a bitterly cold evening, the two-day old baby girl was taken to the Siloam Hospital where she is now being cared for.

LIMPOPO – The police in Mphephu in the Nzhelele area are appealing to the community to help them trace the mother of a two-day-old baby girl who was found covered with a black plastic refuse bag and abandoned in the bushes at Ha-Rabali.

The baby is now being cared for at the Siloam Hospital.

After having survived a bitterly cold evening, she was discovered by two boys who were riding on their bicycles, last Monday.

Solly Muladi who went to the site where the infant was found, said he and a friend had been approached by the two boys.

“We were at a nearby carwash when two boys approached us, saying they had heard a baby crying in the bushes. Once we arrived there, we saw a refuse bag and found the neatly dressed baby inside.”

Muladi said it was his view that the baby had been abandoned on the Monday evening. “The baby looked hungry and was weak.”

He said they alerted the community, and some residents then called the police.”

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said they were investigating a case of concealment of birth. He urged the community to assist the police in finding the mother.
