SARS employees in Polokwane join nationwide strike action

SARS said there is a delay in servicing tax payers as a result of the strike and urged users to make use of digital services during this time.

POLOKWANE – The South African Revenue Service (SARS) said there is a delay in servicing tax payers as a result of a nationwide strike by its employees.

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in Limpopo has confirmed that workers at the branch and other branches in the province, have downed tools today in demand of a wage increase.

Provincial secretary Gerald Twala told the Polokwane Review that they were discouraged by their previous attempt for a 4% wage increase and resumed work after persistence by the employer who said they can’t afford the proposed percentage.

“Workers were given a 1.39% increase in May which was rejected. We will not halt protest action this time because we have drawn lessons from recent strike action by Eskom workers which ended with a commitment to meet a 7% wage increase despite the power utility not having the financial muscle to immediately meet said agreement,” he said.

SARS urged users to make use of digital services during this time.
