Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the woman was asleep in her house when she was awoken by the man who had forcefully entered her house through a window.

“The suspect raped the woman in the early hours of Saturday morning (June 4) and fled the scene. The matter was reported on the same day after the victim’s granddaughter went to check on her,” he said.

Mojapelo added that the suspect was arrested on Monday evening following investigations by police.

The Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has sent a stern warning against perpetrators of gender-based violence.

“The arrest of the suspect should send a clear message to those who victimise vulnerable individuals, especially women and children, that they will be hunted down and brought to book. It is upon everyone to protect our elders to avoid disturbing incidents like this from happening,” Hadebe said.
