[VIDEO] Musina unrest: Police arrest four for violent protests

The protest, believed to be due to water shortages in the area, saw businesses in the Nancefield location area as well as Musina, looted.

LIMPOPO – Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has urged the public to raise their concerns peacefully and desist from resorting to violence.

Her request follows the arrest of four men for public violence, arson and malicious damage to property, following the violent protest action in the Musina area since the start of the week.

The protest, believed to be due to water shortages in the area, saw businesses in the Nancefield location area as well as Musina, looted.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said in a statement the residents went on a rampage, blocked roads and burned tyres.

“The protesters also damaged a police vehicle, torched a municipal tractor and some municipal buildings. Members of the Public Order Police have since stabilised the situation and police deployments will remain in the area to monitor the situation,” Ledwaba explained.

Hadebe warned residents that blocking roads, looting businesses and damaging properties is a serious offence. “Police will not hesitate to act against the perpetrators,” she added.

Ledwaba explained that the arrested men are set to appear before the Musina Magistrate’s Court soon and that more arrests are expected.

“Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects should contact Colonel Mboneni Mukwevho on 082 759 4931, the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111or their nearest police station,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Vhembe municipal spokesperson Matodzi Ralushai said in a statement that the main pipeline has been repaired and that pumping started yesterday (May 12).

“Low-lying areas received water though water couldn’t reach high-lying areas. Municipal employees will regulate water supply so that areas without water can also receive water supply. We request residents to work with our employees so that all areas receive water. Water supply will also be closed at times to make sure reservoirs are filled up,” Ralushai added.
