Are anti-bullying campaigns worth it? Cappies learners weigh-in

Capricorn High School hosted an awareness campaign on bullying, gangsterism and substance use with the aim of educating and stimulating learners' minds of the social challenges they face.

POLOKWANE – Capricorn High School hosted an awareness campaign on bullying, gangsterism and substance use with the aim of educating and stimulating learners’ minds of the social challenges they face.

The Polokwane Review spoke to several learners to find out if awareness campaigns make a difference and what they learnt:

Mosudi Lekota: I think this campaign was necessary to make us aware of the things we see happening around us and to know that we have a support structure to go to and get the necessary help.
Mantsi Maremane: I think this event has been long awaited. It is going to help me not to give into substance use with the pressures we Gr 12’s face and it was super helpful in raising awareness.
Mashabane Thapelo: This event has been an eye-opener because we got to learn about the dangers of the substances we are exposed to everyday, thinking they are fun. When I started high school, I was bullied but overcame it because I spoke to a school social worker and she intervened. I hope my fellow schoolmates learnt as much as I did.
Itumeleng Lekganyane: I believe we learnt a lot from the different speakers that were here, especially those that got to share their own experiences on bullying, crime and gangsterism to prevent us from making the same mistakes.
Kgaogelo Malebati: I think this is a great initiative that SAPS and other organisations have decided to be apart of with the school. Lately, we have had many complaints about bullying and hopefully it will bring about the change we want to see.
Theto Mathekgane: I believe the campaign has highlighted some important factors which I was able to relate to. I was once bullied so it did have an impact on me.
Wanga Maswime: I am glad that we got to attend this event because the school has a problem with bullying. This campaign is a step towards solving this problem. I was bullied in primary school and the event gave me an opportunity to recite a poem which is something I am appreciative of.
