Easter weekend: Two fatalities recorded on Limpopo roads

In two separate incidents, two people were killed while six others escaped with injuries.

LIMPOPO – The first fatalities on provincial roads this Easter weekend, have been recorded.

According to a statement by Transport media liaison officer Mike Maringa, two people were killed in two separate incidents in the Waterberg district.

A further six escaped with injuries.

“The first incident was reported on the N1 near Roodekuil just before midnight. It is believed that the driver of a sedan lost control of the vehicle due to a burst tyre. The vehicle overturned and an 18-year-old female passenger was confirmed dead on the scene,” he explained and added that two other passengers sustained serious injuries.

Maringa said the driver escaped with minor injuries.

The other incident occurred on the R510 near Northam, also just before midnight. “A hatchback and sedan collided and both vehicles overturned. The 37-year-old hatchback driver was certified dead on the scene while two passengers were critically injured,” he added.

Maringa said a third passenger sustained minor injuries. “Reckless driving is cited as a possible cause of the incident.”

Transport MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, who aimed for a zero-fatality rate this Easter weekend, has sent messages of condolences to the families who lost their loved ones.

She plead with motorists to adhere to the laws of the road.

Meanwhile, traffic volumes on the N1 north continue to pick up.
