Transport MEC: Renew your licence before grace period ends

Transport media liaison officer Mike Maringa said the deadline for licence renewal has been extended to May 5 by the Minister of Transport.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety encourages drivers whose licences are due for renewal to visit their nearest centres to renew before the grace period ends.

On Tuesday (April 12), the Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula said motorists have until May 5 to renew their expired driving licence cards.

“We continue to urge those whose driving licence cards expired between March 26, 2020 and August 31, 2021 to renew their licences. The end of the state of disaster means we can no longer issue directions that extend further the grace period. The final opportunity is provided by the current regulations which extends the grace period by 30 days from date of the end of the state of disaster,” he said.

Transport media liaison officer, Mike Maringa said Limpopo accounts for a backlog of 131 732 licenses.

Maringa noted that the department is aware of the challenges that applicants are encountering at various centres.

“The system challenge reported in various centres is receiving attention and the Road Traffic Management Corporation is working around the clock to ensure that all machines are up and running. Drivers are urged to exercise maximum patience at the centres when they encounter delays caused by the NaTIS system,” he said.
