Family upset by Deacon murder suspect’s release

The Deacon family only learned yesterday that one of the main suspects in the murder case had been released on bail.

POLOKWANE – The late Lizette Deacon’s sister-in-law, Christa Deacon, told Review that the news of the suspected murder mastermind’s release has upset the family.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo yesterday (March 30) confirmed the release of Sophie Mmako, who stands accused in the murder trial after the two women were brutally murdered on September 10, 2020. It remains to be confirmed when exactly she was released.

Christa furthermore told Review that the last time they received an update from the police, was about a month after the death of the two women.

“A family friend called me yesterday, to tell me that the accused was out on bail. That is how we usually receive information, from the public or from journalists who call for comment. To be honest, I am a little upset. I know nothing will ever bring them back but some justice would go a long way.”

Christa said she understands that Mmako is yet to stand trial, but that it would have been easier for the family to understand had they been informed of the circumstances that led to her release.

“I don’t understand the grounds for her release and if there had been communication, maybe they would have explained to us why they decided to let her go. All we want is to be able to understand,” she said.

Details surrounding Mmako’s bail conditions are yet to be confirmed.

The trial date is set for August 1-12.
