POLOKWANE – The Gr 12 learners at Flora Park Comprehensive High School say they are utlising their time at the school’s autumn enrichment classes to buckle down and study.

Autumn classes are currently underway and deputy principal, Mpule Dinah Papo said the aim of the camp is to improve the school’s 94.5 % pass rate to 100%.

Learners are not allowed to have their phones during the camp to avoid distractions. Polokwane Review spoke to some of these learners to find out how they are coping.

Jennifer Matamela: Camp has been a great opportunity because we have more time. This camp caters to a combination of different IQs and reasoning which is great because during discussions, it opens up our ways of thinking. It also inspires us to be active in class because different classes are combines during these lessons.
Matome Mogale: It has been a great experience because we are getting more time to study. The time we have while here is more than enough to learn new things and master them. We are able to share information during study sessions and show each other different ways of studying.
Mosima Masenya: The camp is a great initiative because it gives us more time. I miss home and my mom sometimes. It’s not nice being without a phone but there’s no distractions and we are making new friends.
Thato Mothata: The camp has been an eye opener because it has shown us what we can achieve with proper time management. Not having a phone has been wonderful because it as helped me focus and zone out from the outside world. It has also forced us to work together and avoid distractions.
Hope Dagada: The camp has been a great opportunity to spend more time with my friends. Don’t get me wrong, the focus is on studying but it is nice to have more time with my peers. We also have a lot more time to study and learn new things because we have enough time to do our school work and study together.
Mootane Malopyi: It feels like I’m in prison but it has been effective because we do school work from 08:00 to 21:00. We have more than enough time to focus on our books without the distractions of our phones. I will be honest, it was difficult on the first day but I am now coping so well that I am tempted to tell my parents to keep my phone.
