Kamogelo is a poet that brings any emotion to life

Kamogelo studies BA development studies at the University of Venda and he said he already knew he wanted to be a praise poet at the age of 11 and that not a lot of young people understood his talent.

LIMPOPO – Kamogelo Makgathoma is a 23-year-old student who fell in love with poetry at the age of 11. He recites his poetry in English and Sepedi since Sepedi is his home language.

“During my art and culture lessons at school I would always make sure to stand up in class and recite a poem I wrote myself. As time went on my teacher started to notice my talent and I eventually had the honour to deliver an original poem every Friday at the school assembly,” he told CV.

Kamogelo studies BA development studies at the University of Venda and he said he already knew he wanted to be a praise poet at the age of 11 and that not a lot of young people understood his talent.

“The fact that my peers didn’t understand my poetry did not stop me from doing what I love and eventually I got noticed by other people in my community. Little did I know I would find myself rendering my poetry at People’s Poet, but I did not give up on my dream and it happened,” he said.

Because of poetry Kamogelo has travelled to places like East London in 2020.

“I praised the late SACP secretary general Martin Thembi and Chris Hani and it was filmed on channel 404 in April 2021.”

He said his biggest struggle is when people don’t want to pay him after his performance, but that does not stop him from living his dream. He also mentioned that he did not go to school to hone his talent and he does not have a mentor, but his skill continues to get better as each day goes by.

“Besides being a poet, I am also a student, a leader, the founder of Tshepoho Ya Toro poetry club and the chairperson of the Praise Poet Legacy project. I have seen so many poets give up on their dreams because of harsh criticism, and I would love to encourage them to not give up on their dreams, no matter how small they may look because you do not know where they will take you one day,” said Kamogelo.
